Art in the Garden Whimiscal garden art meets watercolor art in the garden of Marti Pernice Marti's garden will be featured along with 5 other gardens and local watercolor artist, Jake Marshall, on the Northland garden club garden tour June 25.
Marti is well known among Northland gardeners for her tenacious gardening spirit. After the recent tornado destroyed all her garden and most of her house, she set about instantly recreating a garden that would make her laugh while adding continuous serenity. To get that serenity, she added a 4'X35' reflecting pool graced by two dolphins. These elegant sea creatures provide the tranquil sounds of running water that splashes over the 1 ton of tumbled glass covering the bottom of the pool. Lounging along side all this serenity is an iron hippo just emerging from a dip. This oasis of water sits conveniently between the tiled, completely furnished outdoor living room, and a multi-tiered perennial bed that wraps around one side of Marti's house and up into the rose garden. Marti estimates she has 70 or so roses in all varieties and all colors. Garden rooms provide a place to sit and enjoy her collection of garden art, always designed with a laugh in mind. Humor and a love of gardening are the unique stamps of this gardener.

Marti will be hosting local watercolor artist Jake Marshall. Marshall, a publications designer at Park University in Parkville, Mo., has been painting since graduating from Washburn University with a fine arts degree. He has also studied painting at the Kansas City Art Institute and the University of Wisconsin. Marshall, who lives In Overland Park, Kan., enjoys painting flowers in a realistic style and also paints colorful floral patterns that entirely fill a picture. He sometimes slices his traditional watercolors into squares to create "floral rearrangements" that turn paintings into collages that are slightly abstract.
Tour starts at 1:00 pm. Tickets will be available at the Family Tree Nursery in Liberty, any of the gardens or by calling Dee West, 816-455-4013.
Northland Garden Club Board Members Dee West and John Palmisano present a $1000.00 donation to Sandy Sanders, Director of the MCCFoundation.
